Spines vs Wordsmith for self-publishing
Spines describes supported publishing with production, distribution and a project manager. Wordsmith advertises a separately priced managed-publishing offer alongside its Manuscripts subscription. Compare the actual release proposal, not just a headline fee or the phrase 'self-publishing platform'.

Normalize the release scope
Spines describes proofreading, cover design, formatting, distribution and project-manager support. It also describes additional services and formats. Ask which are included in the proposal for your actual book and which cost more.
Wordsmith's managed offer lists Fred's edit, Iris readers, typesetting, cover, print/ebook ISBNs, KDP and IngramSpark listings and a checked printed proof. The Manuscripts subscription is not the same offer. Compare the managed release against a managed release, not against a software fee.
Ask who does what after you pay
Name the person responsible for production, the editorial work included, the revision rounds and the final proof approval. Ask who manages corrections after release and how the author receives sales information.
Get ownership, account access, files, fees and royalty handling clear in the actual agreement. A public summary is useful for shortlisting, but it is not a substitute for the current contract or a promise of sales.
When Spines is the better fit
Spines may be the stronger fit if its verified package and any added services match formats, language or support needs that Wordsmith's current offer does not cover. Do not infer those differences from a generic comparison table without checking the proposal.
Wordsmith is worth discussing when the draft exists and its published managed scope fits your intended release. Ask about your manuscript and timetable before treating either platform's advertised workflow as a commitment for your project.
Make the choice on the actual scope
Wordsmith's separate managed publishing offer is $999 per book, paid once. Check the included services and manuscript fit; this is not the software subscription.
Wordsmith does not promise every Spines service, translation, audiobook or advertising capability. Store listings do not guarantee discovery, retail stocking or sales.

Sources and review method
Vendor documentation establishes the advertised workflow, not measured quality or a publication outcome. Recommendations are Wordsmith's editorial judgment about fit. Competitor prices are linked rather than copied into an aging price league table.
