Privacy Policy

Last updated: October 25, 2026

Wordsmith collects the information you provide when you create an account (name, email, authentication identifiers from Google sign-in) and the content you submit to the editor (manuscripts, essays, editorial chat). We use this information solely to operate the service for you.

User content is stored on Neon, a managed Postgres provider, with encryption in transit and at rest. We use third-party model providers (Inception Labs and OpenAI) to generate editorial suggestions; your content is sent to these providers solely for this purpose, under standard API terms. We do not sell user data, and we do not share it with third parties for marketing or analytics purposes.

To understand how Wordsmith is used and to fix problems, we use PostHog for product analytics, session recordings and error reports. This covers the pages you visit, the buttons you click, page timings and the technical details of errors. Session recordings never capture the text of your manuscript or essay: the editor and your book pages are left out of every recording, and form fields are masked. PostHog processes this data on our behalf and stores it in the United States.

We use cookies to keep you signed in and operate the editor, and a first-party cookie that lets PostHog tell visits apart. We do not use third-party advertising cookies or cross-site tracking. We may update this policy as the product evolves; material changes will be communicated to active users by email.

Payments are processed by Stripe. Your card details are handled by Stripe and are not stored by Wordsmith.

Connecting Wordsmith to ChatGPT

If you connect Wordsmith to ChatGPT (or another app that asks to use your Wordsmith account), you choose what it may do on a consent screen: read your manuscripts, essays, Fred's notes and analyses, and, if you allow it, upload work, start Fred's reads, ask Fred questions, and accept or reject his suggestions. When you use Wordsmith from ChatGPT, the parts of your work and Fred's output that answer your request are sent to OpenAI, which handles them under its own terms and privacy policy. Anything you upload or change through ChatGPT is stored in your Wordsmith account like work you add in the editor, and kept until you delete it or your account.

The connection uses short-lived access tokens (one hour) that ChatGPT renews while you keep using it; a connection unused for 60 days expires. We store only a one-way hash of each token. You can disconnect at any time under Connected apps in your account (wordsmith.page/account/connected-apps), which stops access at once.

To request deletion of your account or for any question about your data, email [email protected] or [email protected].
